nosag CD 3115ALLGÉN: Sonata for Solo Violin - JOAR SKORPEN (2CD+1 DVD)

This is the world premier recording of the almost two hour Sonata for Solo Violin by Swedish excentric composer Claude Loyola Allgén - this is music that, like the composer´s String Quartet #2 (nosag CD 114), had an enormous impact on the listeners when it was performed, now by young violinist Joar Skorpen in 2000. This is a recording from that very live concert - on two CDs and with an extra bonus: Parts of the general rehearsal with all the 25 music stands, the broken string and Skorpen´s struggle captured on a DVD.
Most of the musical oevre of Claude Loyola Allgén was unperformed for a very long time, considered "crazy" or "unplayable". When this talented artist plays the complicated score it turns out to be filled with great beauty, fantasm, composer´s skill and sentiment. This is, like the recording of the String Quartet #2, a historical - and artistical - really great deed, indeed!

nosag CD 114ALLGÉN: String Quartet #2 - IORE String Quartet

Now it is here! The world premier recording of String Quartet #2 by Swedish excentric composer Claude Loyola Allgén - this is music that had an enormous impact on the listeners when it was recently first performed by IORE String Quartet. The same ensemble here presents the exciting piece in a live concert recording in 2004.

Most of the musical oevre of Claude Loyola Allgén was unperformed for a very long time, considered "crazy" or "unplayable". When these really serious musicians take care of the complicated score it turns out to be filled with great beauty, fantasm, composer´s skill and sentiment. The newly started IORE String Quartet here does an historical - and artistical - really great deed, indeed!

nosag CD 100BJÖlRN ERLANDSSSON - Grönskan

Lennart Sjögren is one of the finest poets of Sweden. He is born and living on the island Öland outside the Swedish east coast. In his poems nature is always present as the fundamental base for all of Man´s doing. Animals frequently pass by and all of his texts are filled with a dark and sincere environmental mood.

Now pianist/composer Björn Erlandsson put some of these poems to music. He scored for Mezzo Soprano (here sung by amazing Margaretha Melz, also appearing on nosag CDs 003 and 008), Saxophone Quartet (Hässlö Saxofonkvartett) and piano (the composer).
Erlandsson also wrote four Summer poems for piano and four saxophones, very well matching the beautiful and tender mood of this sweet CD.

nosag ROS 001Bengt Andersson/Ingemar Edgren - LEGEND

The viola is the only instrument with its own names day, and maybe the instrument told most funny stories about. It is sometimes a misunderstood instrument - many people believes it plays a subordinated role in the orchestra. So VERY wrong! Without the viola the musical world would be much, much less rich.

On this CD Bengt Andersson, former first viola player of the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, plays a viola built in 1793 and the repertory he has chosen is really messured with golden thread: There are contemporary pieces written for the soloist by Marco Ciannella and Argenzio Jorio, and also Swedish pieces by Fredrik Sixten, Hilding Hallnäs, Olof Gullberg, Torsten Sörenson and Ture Rangström´s beautiful Mälarlegender. The last three composers´ music are for solo piano, played by Ingemar Edgren.
We can also listen to two Violin Sonata movements by Mozart arranged for viola.

(Forsberg also appears together with tenor Bengt Nordfors and violinist Nils-Erik Sparf on nosag CD 021, ”The Andrée Expedition”).

nosag CD 113Björn Malmqvist - BALTIC BASS

The double-bass has a fantastic potential as a solo instrument with its enormous range, its very special colour palette, its harmonics, its pizzicato possibilities and last but not least, its singing qualities. Many contemporary composers have realized this, and through the last decades there has been a great deal of music composed for the double-bass. The influences of great instrumentalists like Gary Karr, Franco Petracchi, Edgar Meyer, and many others can not be overestimated.

A little bit of this music is presented on this CD. It is all what we call "contemporary" –Henze’s "Serenade" from 1949 being the oldest and Christensen´s "Le Chemin de Diamant" being the newest, composed in 1996. The music is all written for double-bass solo, except for the Christensen piece, which is a duet with the cello. One instrument but many moods and characters. We call the CD "Baltic Bass" because the music all comes from countries around the Baltic Sea.

Here you here the great soloist Björn Malmqvist, the principal of the bass section in the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra (SON).

nosag CD 070Bromme/Práda - SATURDAY AFTERNOON CONCERT

nosag CD 143DEBORAH HENRIKSSON - Simple Gifts

”Simple Gifts” combines different kinds of songs in order to come closer to universal experience, in order to move the listener. Musical expression using the human voice is as old and as varied as humanity. Thus the songs have been carefully chosen to express universal truths and experiences with which we can all identify: the common denominator being that life is a gift, that we are all on the same journey, and that personal truth can be found by looking and listening within.

DEBORAH HENRIKSSON is an American singer and music teacher who has lived and given concerts in Sweden for many years.

nosag CDVD 142DUO GELLAND - Dillon Traumwerk (DVD)

In this experimental art music DVD Duo Gelland performs music by James Dillon in a concert-like situation for Johan Ramström´s single camera. It´s a performance that takes place in real time in a physical place. The performers stomp and breathe, yet instead of making the audience merely see what they hear, Johan Ramström has involved the eye in a choreography - literally taking the camera for a swirl about the church, accidentally even bumping into the performers - the camera becomes a third member of the ensemble.
One night wonder; Is the camera´s dance due to convulsive insights borne out of the music? Or is the camera´s wide eye catching the music in a magical spell, forming it, coaxing it on all the way to the end?

This is a new way of filming art music performances!

nosag CD 127GUNNAR BUCHT - Five decades

The Swedish composer Gunnar Bucht on this CD presents a collection of his chamber music compositions written during five decades - from the Six seasons´ songs from 1965 up to the violin duo Tre per due from 2004. We meet the composer in a sound universe where his very personal tone and voice is always heard, regardless of time or type of ensemble.

The most significant caracteristics of the music of Gunnar Bucht can be simplyfied in one word - orchestral. His music is always powerful, dynamic and filled with colours, even if the "ensemble" is a solo piano or two violins - you almost hear an orchestra playing. This is not in any way meaning that his music is always loud and heavy - on the contrary; few ensembles can play as soft and quiet as a full orchestra, or for that matter - a choir. You get the full spectrum of expression from the chamber music of Gunnar Bucht, who by the way is most known as composer of gigantic orchestral pieces ;-)

The music is performed by great Swedish artists:
Annika Skoglund, Soprano
Love Derwinger, piano
Duo Gelland, violin duo
Members from Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra
(conducted by Jan-Lennart Höglund)
Aguéli-kvartetten (Jan & Marie Stigmer, PO Lindberg, Torbjörn Rapp)

nosag CD 158GÖRAN AGDUR / SEMMY STAHLHAMMER - hands folded

On this CD composer and pianist Göran Agdur continues his cooperation with violinist Semmy Stahlhammer with whom he previously released the album Dawn Earth. Similar to Dawn Earth (nosag CD 051), you will find a mixture of different character pieces for violin and piano. Some of these pieces bring out a folkloristic nordic tone, but here is also waltzes and music which might have been inspired by Romani music.

All stylistic comparisons aside, this music is ultimately very personal and specifically Agdurian one could say. The melodies are strikingly songful and you almost get an impression of the violin pronouncing invisible lyrics. Sometimes we are moved to the telling of a fairy tale, an atmosphere of once upon a time… However these shadings always gather together in the beauty of the violin melody; this expression is always at the center.

nosag CD 104INGER WIKSTRÖM - OPERA: En dåres försvarstal

The chamber opera The Confession of a Fool is based on the novel by August Strindberg. It tells the story of the passionate love between Siri von Essen and himself. The book was originally written in french with the title Le plaidoyer d´un fou. By order of Strindberg it was not to be published in Sweden as long as Siri was alive. The libretto is not only based on The Confession of a Fool, but also on the love-letters between August and Siri published as He and She, and some of the dialogue is taken from Strindberg´s own plays. Siri played a very important role in Strindberg´s life and writing. She was his model and inspiration, his ideal and de-mon. This opera is about the dramatical marriage between two strong individuals, who´s love and hatred made it´s way into great literature. The worldpremière of The Confession of a Fool took place at the Vasa Theatre in Stockholm August 10th 2002.

nosag CD 154JOHAN HAMMERTH - Den vilde pojkens sånger - 4 Kärlekssånger

Two Song Suites by Swedish composer Johan Hammerth.
The Wild Boy´s Songs have a role model in reality. In 1800 a boy was captured and it was alleged that he had grown up alone in the wild amongst wolves. In his composition, Johan Hammerth has had in mind the mysteriousness surrounding the uncivilized boy. The vocal parts seeks simplicity and clarity whilst the orchestration builds rather more on clangs than melody.

Four love songs speaks about words and feelings like relationship, love, emotions, fragile, gentle, dissonant cross-roads, dark silhouettes, syncopated rhythm, rhymes, united you and I and repeated mantras - All that is left is you and me.

The amazing singers Olle Persson and Hannah Holgersson colours each song cycle with great variety in expression and emotion and together with the superb playing of the Jönköping sinfonietta and its leader Jan Stigmer we get an expressive experience far beyond the every day concert.

Together with the Frenchman Maurice Ohana we are transported yet further away from the tonal and listen to two movements from Si le jour paraît. We are offered Aube; a work with caustic tones and quarter tones and the virtuoso movement Jeu des quatre vents. nosag CD 083Musik: Jan Wallgren - VANDRING

This CD contains Jan Wallgren´s four main chamber music compositions for string quartet and solists.

JAN WALLGREN (1935 - 1996) Jan was born in Oslo and grew up in Stockholm. He devoted himself for many years mainly to jazz and toured with his own trio as well as playing in several different jazz orchestras, and his piano playing and compositions marked the quartet that Bengt Ernryd led during the middle of the 60s. Jan has appeared as a soloist and composer with among others the Swedish Radio Jazz Group and the Polish Radios Big band, andhe is documented both on LP and CD.

Aside from working as a piano soloist, orchestra leader, and theatre musician, Jan taught singers and musicians, classically trained pianists, and music students. He wrote theatre and film music, and composed an opera, "Balagantjik," that was premiered at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1986. Among several important compositions, his Requiem, "För levande och döda" (For Living and Dead), set to texts by the poet Tomas Tranströmer, stands out.

Jan’s final composition for The Stockholm String Quartet, "Vandring," with texts taken from Dag Hammarskjöld’s book "Vägmärken" (Markings), was finished in April 1996, two months before his death.

nosag CD 080Olov Franzén - LA TERZA VIA

This CD contains Olov Franzén´s four main compositions for solo cello:

The Unseen Present (1993)
Organic Music No2 "The Uncreated light" (1995)
Gryningsmusik (Dawn Music) (1980)
La Terza Via (The Third Way) (2000)

They are all quite unique and without parallels in the cello literature. Including them in one’s repertoire should be a challenge to every cellist.

Olov Franzén´s compositions encompass all sorts of vocal and instrumental combinations, from solo pieces to large orchestra and choir. His style has been described as "more modern than Modernism, though not difficult to understand," perhaps because his gravity and engagement is always more important than any musical style.

He is quite concerned about the great problems of the world today, with its escalating environmental pollution, violence, and wars. To counter this, he wants to enrich the spiritual values of life in every way.

Music is one such important way.

nosag CD 146PETER LINDROTH - Boxed Chamber

Peter Lindroth about his musical work:

My music is mine, but I inhabit a musical room where early memories of popular songs from the fifties; piano exercises; concerts; music school; pop-groups; choirs; music colleges; theatres; Swedish ‘folk parks’; nightclubs; studios, and composition studies co-exist with a constantly present radio. All of these things are input that, of course, affect the output. To me ‘tradition’ is something omnipresent. You can stroll around in it like an old city; take a closer look at the buildings, or just walk about in the everchanging scenery, lost in ones own thoughts. You could chose not to see it, but it´ s still there, regardless.
At times I feel the need to distance myself from my music. I find it helpful to let the music rest for a while. When I do that, mercifully I remember very little of the compositional process. If I don’t let it rest for a while then there’s always the risk that memories of composing the piece might end up blocking my ears. I try to listen intuitively. . Of course I do remember what it was I was trying to achieve, and the special moments when the pieces started coming alive and began communicating with me.

This CD contains chamber music from this very many-faced Swedish composer. Peter Lindroth music is also available on nosag CD 133.

nosag CD 133PETER LINDROTH - Från den oföränderliga bryggan

Peter Lindroth composed this amazing "chamber opera" for Basso voice and chamber ensemble to a rich text by poet Ludvig Josephson and the result, when performed by perfectly suited KammarensembleN and singer John Erik Eleby, conducted by Michael Bartosch, is a miniature drama that keeps you engaged to the very end:

One man’s unhappy love affair with his own memories and the past keeps him from taking part in his present, which is happening all around him. He prefers to move in border territories, both those between dreams and reality and purely geographical ones; Stockholm’s northeastern highway exits serve as a sort of stage for his nostalgic fantasies and wondrous experiences. Slightly ashamed, the man realizes that his consciousness is full of junk that doesn’t lead him anywhere, and he feels that his observant attention to details and other people amounts to pure voyeurism.
A song cycle about an autumnal longing From the unchanging pier (the title of the CD in Swedish) on the horizon.

nosag CD 091PETERSON-BERGER OCH POETERNA - Faringer/Johnson

It is commonly acccepted that Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867-1942) is one of Swedish music history’s best known personalities - as composer, critic, cultural debater, opera playwright, translator etc. The selection on this record takes us from the composer’s very earliest songs (late 1880’s) to the last Karlfeldt songs which were written for the poet’s final collection of poems Hösthorn from 1927.

Soprano Solveig Faringer´s versatility is evidenced by a career that has alternated since her debut in 1973 between different genres such as chamber music, romances, opera, sacred music, and folk music.
Pianist Lena Johnson grew up in the province of Jämtland, and was therefore already as a child exposed to the music of Peterson-Berger, which has since then been an oft-recurring part of her repertoire.

nosag CD 067Peter Schuback/Davor Kajfes - IMPOSITIONS

This recording was made in Stockholm on the 23rd of October, 2000 at Radio Sweden's Studio 2. The musicians had no preconceptions and did not even discuss what they should play. An 76 minutes long tape was recorded, out of which a selection of 60 minutes is here presented.

Davor Kajfes and Peter Schuback have been working together for two years with this kind of direct creation, musicianship, composing, or what can even be called improvisation. They prefer the term "impositions".

Impositions are something like improvisations. These words seek to express the possible as it is making itself possible. Improvisations can be heard as such only as long as they are heard improvisationally and this means that they must be heard without a comprehensive understanding of improvisation. They cannot be heard as a kind of improvisationism, that is, as part of any attempt to construct a system of improvisation.

nosag CD 2028STELLAN SAGVIKs landskap

This is a very special double CD with music and hear-plays by Swedish composer Stellan Sagvik - It is based on Swedish folklore tunes from different parts of Sweden, played by a solo wind instrument and strings, but it is NOT arrangements, more a contemporary comment with the old material twisted and turned and interluded with sound scapes from different times and places - 18th century harbours, town squares of today and yesterday, water dripping mines, birdsong glens, steps on old stairs and shoot-outs outside the restaurant.
A kind of ear journey, with a light joke attitude eye.

As one of the musicians put it: "This is NOT folklore, this is NOT contemporary classical, this is NOT arrangements, this is NOT eam , this is a bloody sallad!"

The 138 minutes CD is filled with great artist from Sweden and Transylvania and the composer is conducting.

nosag CD 088Solveig Wikman plays DAG LUNDIN

Solveig Wikman´s debut on the concert platform took place in 1965 and since then she has given concerts as a soloist, performed chamber music and acted as an accompanist all over Sweden, the neigh-bouring Nordic countries and other countries. She has also played piano duets with her husband Bertil Wikman for concerts, radio, TV and recordings. Since 1978 she has been one of Sweden’s few full-time pianists, at present at Sörmland’s Music & Theatre.
For many years Solveig Wikman has been one of the first to take an active part on behalf of Dag Lundin’s piano compositions. Many of them have been performed at concerts and some have been recorded for Radio Sweden.

Dag Lundin may be said to be a ‘tonal composer of today’, one who has never been interested in radical experiments in his composing. He treats the instruments and the singing voice in a traditional manner and prefers to write music that appeals to the general public. All music must be melodical and have a main thread, a connecting thought, he says; it may be in some repetition, a bass line, a rhythm or a special motive. Dag Lundin’s musical style can be described as a Nordic constellation of late Romanticism and Impressionism with elements of folk music.

nosag CD 107Sparf / Härenstam Duo: Racconti

After two very well appreciated CDs (”The Bard”, nosag CD 074, and
”What Happened in Fremantle”, GASON CD 716) the guitar player
David Härenstam here presents a classical music production together with virtuoso violinist Nils-Erik Sparf. The Duo here plays hot and glowing versions of music from several times: Roman, Beethoven, Paganini, Piazzolla and a fresh contemporary piece by Swede Eberhard Eyser, specially written for these musicians. Here the Duo invites the pianist Bengt Forsberg to form a brilliant Trio.

The CD ”Racconti” - Tales - is a virtuoso presentation of exciting music where the violin playing of Sparfs in some Paganinisonatas with the very listening Härenstam guitar has an extra shine, together with the sparkling version of the Piazzolla Histoire de Tango.

nosag CD 2090Staffan Björklund - 12 modulationen, Palindrom, Reminiszenzen (2CD)

"12 Modulationen, Palindrom und Reminiszenzen" has its spiritual starting point in Bach’s “Das Wohltemperierte Klavier,” and the work’s pianistic play it is also related to K. Stockhausen’s "Klavierstücke." In the field of energy between these poles, an inner drama "an inner battle" plays itself out: the lone person’s battle with himself and his means of expression, the lonely fight before the ice-cold and ancient eye of the universe.

This is a Double CD at single CD price!

nosag CD 044Staffan Björklund - DIALOGUES...

Staffan Björklund (b. 1944), former cathedral organist in Linköping, Sweden, now free lance as a pianist and composer, created this enormous "Dialogues pour piano seul" 1991 when he spent some months in Paris, re-taking contact with his friends from studying years, and also concentrating on composing. The result is an amazingly powerfull solo piece, 70 minutes long and filled with extreme expression and emotion. The recording, from the performance at Swedish Academy of Music 1993, captures the intensity that even caused a string to breake in the grand Steinway piano!

nosag AIVCD001Strings from The Gothenburg Opera - SOUVENIRER FRÅN GÖTEBORG

Gothenburg was, and is, a town with great cultural life. Many musicians from other countries lived and worked in this Swedish west coast metropol. The most well-known is Bedrich Smetana who even is said to have gotten his inspiration for Ma Vlast during his stay. His music is part of this CD with composers linked to Gothenburg in different ways. Smetana was not the only Bohemian passing the city - Also Jozef Czapek lived there in the mid 1800s.
On this CD musicians from the Gothenburg Opera play music 50, 100 and 150 years old, for strings, viola and piano and for piano solo by the two composers mentioned above and also by Swedes Elfrida Andrée and Hilding Hallnäs.

nosag CD 072Vestmanniaensemblen - J:SON LINDH: A Day at the Farm

The jazz flutist Björn J:son Lindh is well-known for his many recordings of his own music with a very personal, unique way of playing the flute. Less known are his compositions for chamber ensemble. Here we are presented first recordings of very humourous, entertaining and ear-candylike music - for example the sound of a day at the farm, the title of the CD - but also introvert, meditative and calm layed back gems of contemplation for wind quintet, piano and different combinations of those instruments. In the suite "A day at the farm" you can also hear the Swedish folklore instrument keyed fiddle, a kind of hurdy-gurdy played with a bow, like a violin, but the stops made with a mechanique like the old medevial instrument.
